Senior Java Backend Engineer

Flutterwave was founded on the principle that every African must be able to participate and thrive in the global economy. To achieve this objective, Flutterwave has built a trusted payment infrastructure that allows consumers and businesses across Africa and internationally to make and receive payments in a convenient, borderless manner. As a Senior Java Backend Engineer, you will design, implement, maintain, and support software systems powering Flutterwave's products in the financial domain. Day to day you will research and implement best practice technology frameworks, stay current with the latest technology infrastructure and processes in the payment industry, mentor and develop a talented group of engineers, design and deliver code supporting new product features in an agile environment, develop features and RESTful APIs with an event-driven microservice architecture, create database schemas for new products, maintain application quality and performance, uphold code integrity and security, carry out unit and automated testing, and leverage AI coding agents and assistants such as Claude Code and Copilot to accelerate development while maintaining code quality and ownership. You will also design and build APIs and services that AI agents can consume safely, with clear contracts, structured outputs, authentication, and rate limiting.

5 to 6 years of experience with Java, JEE, Spring Boot, and associated technologies. Hands-on experience with Java 8, multithreading, JVM tuning, and performance improvements. Excellent knowledge of data structures, algorithms, and their practical application. Excellent knowledge of database and ORM technologies. Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills. Hands-on experience working with AI coding assistants and agents with sound judgment on when to trust, verify, or override their output. Excellent DevOps knowledge including source control, continuous integration, configuration management, deployment automation, containers, orchestration, and cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, and GCP. Ability and interest to quickly learn new languages and technologies. Excellent time management skills. Node.js experience is a plus. Understanding of Docker and Kubernetes is a plus. Kafka experience is a plus. Experience building agent-facing or agent-integrated systems including tool calling, MCP, LLM API integration, or agentic workflows is a plus.
